Finding New Ways to Connect People to the News
Come learn how Audrey Cooper has made the San Francisco Chronicle one of the country’s most innovative newspaper-based media outlets in the country. At our January Round Table lunch, Audrey will speak about the state of media in San Francisco and what to expect from the SF Chronicle going forward.
Audrey is the first woman to fill the role of editor in chief in the company’s 150-year history. She is also the youngest woman ever named as the top editor of a major U.S. newspaper-based company. Under her leadership, she started an in-house incubator project to transform the newsroom into a digitally focused operation that has successfully forged new storytelling techniques.
She has also prioritized investigative journalism. Her newsroom exposed the numerous safety failures that led to the 2011 San Bruno gas explosion and continues to uncover new details about the mismanaged reconstruction of the Bay Bridge. The Chronicle also has been a rare critical voice in exploring the benefits and costs of the region’s most recent tech boom.
Audrey began her career at the Chronicle in 2006 as an assistant metro editor. San Francisco magazine has called her one of the city’s most powerful women. Editor and Publisher magazine named her one of the world’s “Top 10 Women to Watch” and Advertising Age named her one of the “Top 40 under 40.” She’s been featured in Cosmopolitan magazine’s “50 Fearless Women” issue and is a regular speaker and interviewer. She was born and raised in the Kansas City area and graduated magna cum laude from Boston University with separate degrees in journalism and political science.
