Journalism is an Essential Pillar of Democracy — and CIR Is Keeping the Discipline Alive as the Go-To News Generator
In an election month where our home and electronic mailboxes were littered with biased and often idiotic promotions for politicians and propositions, we were reminded of the dearth of good, objective journalism. Happily, investigative reporting is alive and well in the SF Bay Area.
In 2013, the California Watch and Bay Citizen brands were consolidated into one: The Center for Investigative Reporting. Now, this award-winning enterprise works from new state-of-the-art quarters in Emeryville. As it invests in newer strategies to promote robust and thriving investigative reporting through traditional and new media platforms, this fall the Center for Investigative Reporting is launching “Reveal,” the nation’s first investigative public radio show and podcast.
Come hear from Joaquin about this latest foray — in the context of today’s CIR, and what it all means to PRRT members as leaders in communications and as regional, state and US citizens.
Joaquin Alvarado became the CEO of the Center for Investigative Reporting earlier this year. Before joining CIR, Joaquin served as senior vice president for digital innovation at American Public Media and founding senior vice president for diversity and innovation at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. He is the founder of CoCo Studios, which promotes media collaboration and game development for fiber and mobile networks, and was the founding director of the Institute for Next Generation Internet, which launched in 2005 from San Francisco State University.
The Center for Investigative Reporting, founded in 1977, is the nation’s only nonprofit, multiplatform investigative reporting organization. It has the ability to produce stories in-house on every available media platform. Devoted to holding powerful interests accountable to the public trust, CIR creatively employs cutting-edge technology and innovative storytelling to reveal injustice, spark change at all levels of society and influence public dialogue on critical issues.
