Wondering about the origins of the San Francisco Public Relations Round Table Philip McCombs Scholarship Fund? In 1990, the organization decided to create a scholarship fund for students demonstrating “academic excellence and career potential” in the field of public relations and named the fund in honor of Philip McCombs, a co-founder of organization. According to the December 1990 Bulletin of the SF PRRT:
McCombs scholarships of $500 each were awarded at PRRT’s bi-weekly luncheon at the City Club, Tuesday, November 13 to:
- Jose Felix De La Toree, 26, senior in the Undergraduate Public Relations Program at San Jose State University;
- Jeffery Christensen, 28, student in the Graduate Public Relations Program at San Jose State University; and
- Arzu Gotmen, 25, student in the Graduate Public Relations Program at Golden Gate University. Gormen is a foreign exchange student from Istanbul, Turkey.
Thanks to the generosity of many members, scholarships have increased in size since the initial 1990 awards of $500 each. Today, you may contribute directly or by making a purchase at the 10 December Holiday Party Silent Auction.
Currently, students from the University of the Pacific, Golden Gate University, Sonoma State University, and San Jose State University are eligible to apply. Each of these institutions has a public relations degree program, reviewed annually for eligibility by the Scholarship Committee.
