In an age of media consolidation, how can we ensure that local journalism continues to thrive? And as PR and communications professionals, how can we support nonprofit journalism?

San Francisco Public Relations Round Table is excited to welcome Frances Dinkelspiel, co-founder and executive editor of Cityside – publisher of Berkeleyside and its newer sibling, The Oaklandside. At our Wednesday, October 20, virtual event, you’ll learn how she created an innovative digital news platform for local news, hear some of her favorite stories along the way, and discover more about Cityside’s vision for creating mission-driven newsrooms in more cities.

About Our Guest: Frances Dinkelspiel, Berkeleyside and Cityside co-founder, is a journalist and author. Her first book, Towers of Gold: How One Jewish Immigrant Named Isaias Hellman Created California, published in November 2008, was a San Francisco Chronicle bestseller. Her second book, Tangled Vines: Greed, Murder, Obsession and an Arsonist in the Vineyards of California, was published in October 2015 and was both a New York Times and San Francisco Chronicle bestseller. Frances is a former staff reporter for the Syracuse Newspapers and the San Jose Mercury News. Her freelance work has appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, People Magazine, Daily Beast, the San Francisco Chronicle, and elsewhere.

About Sarah Segal (Moderator): From brand launches to executive profiles, Round Table Board Member Sarah Segal has a deep understanding and love for the communications terrain. She began her career in journalism and worked on the production teams of CBS and NBC News, then in-house for both public and private companies before moving agency-side. She advised tech startups with The Blueshirt Group before joining SHIFT Communications. In 2018 she launched her consumer public relations agency, Segal Communications, which was acquired in January 2021 by The Messina Group.
